This especially food-friendly wine is so varietally characterful and intriguing that its outstanding response to our terroir has sustained its ranking among the most honored and loyally followed wines we produce. We grow vines originating from the Loire Valley as well as Pomerol and St Émilion, as the foundation of a wine famed for elegance and complexity as well as considerable age worthiness.

Our success in gaining recognition of Cabernet Franc as a freestanding varietal for crafting fine wine, consistently shares a spotlight of distinction with our development of Octagon, the winery’s classic Bordeaux blend. If there were not an Octagon, and if Cabernet Franc were the only varietal grown at the estate, then a generalized distinction would come into much more clarifying relief: Cabernet Franc’s prestige as a red wine of suppleness, finesse, elegance and age-worthiness would be just that much more obvious, and this would be perceived to be a genuinely distinctive contribution of our terroir to the varietal’s reputation.

The estate took the lead in planting Cabernet Franc in Virginia in 1976, which revealed the varietal’s natural adaptability to our fluctuating climatic conditions, almost beyond comparison among red wine grapes. Nor was this adaptability unassisted by our famously temperate climate, for we found that certain vineyard blocks of Cabernet Franc will perform unpredictably better than others, in alternating growing seasons. Overall, moreover, we were discovering our weather patterns to be ideal for the balanced ripening of this varietal, raising it above its tendency in colder regions to exhibit green pepper as a signature of less ripeness, while avoiding the baked fruit effects of hotter regions.

In our first 16 vintages we, ourselves, adhered to custom in producing Cabernet Franc only as a grape for blending, primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon. With the excellent 1992 vintage we could no longer resist fermenting, aging, and bottling the wine by itself, and refocused our commitment to the grape.

From the earliest 1990s, we launched upon a systematic expansion of cultivation, diversified both in site selection and in plant materials, which dwarfs that of every other Virginia vineyard in scale, consistency, and critical success, and at 40 acres in vine represents an above-average estate of its own in this region. In 1993, we doubled our original 4 acres with new plant materials from Bordeaux selections, in an 8-acre expansion. Within the following decade, all of that new growth would be replanted on superior rootstock, with further diversification of selections. In 1994 we added 4.5 acres in another new site, and in 2000, 3 more, in 3 new selections from Bordeaux. In 2010, another 4 acres, in 2013, another 5. Repeatedly, our viticulturist Fernando Franco has traveled to California and to St. Émilion, investigating plant selections closely with growers in both regions, while Professor of Oenology Denis Dubourdieu has traveled from Bordeaux to consult with us on-site.

With the watershed award of the first Virginia Governor’s Cup for Cabernet Franc in 1999, for our 1997 vintage, the whole region began to pursue this varietal with almost unanimous concentration. But the result of our commitments is a capability, through our range of seasonal conditions, to produce Cabernet Franc under its own varietal name, which is conspicuously welcomed by sommeliers besieged by the more numerous Bordeaux blends. From London to Rome, to Chicago to San Francisco, the winery’s Cabernet Franc has found a niche for itself in restaurant lists of the highest discernment and respect for regional distinctiveness in wine. Fully a third of our friends cite “their” Cabernet Franc as their favorite among all our reds, and in competitions it is constantly vying only with Octagon for highest honors. There is no reason for this but the varietal’s inclination to be grown in our terroir, which we repay with the most assiduous and exuberant efforts of our own.

FOOD PAIRINGS

TASTING NOTES

Dark garnet core, brilliant clarity in the glass. Intense, effusively luscious flavors of ripe red berries with caramelised notes of fig, cherry, and plum, elegantly woven together in barrel. Long-finishing and tannically vivid, yet with a remarkably soft palate.

VINTAGE FACTORS

Cellar life 15 yrs

Another challenging season which started with very early budbreak in late March, followed by a 3 night of frost which impacted and reduced the yield in the early budding Chardonnay and Nebbiolo by 20%, three more frosty nights in April did not cause further damage and the season normalized in early May inducing ideal bloom conditions for the clusters. Above average precipitation in June until early August made us a bit jittery, yet hopeful, and finally we started receiving some periods of sunshine, harvest started on August 21st on white varietals with good to very good quality especially on grapes picked in early September. Stellar-solar weather in the first 4 weeks of September gifted us with an opportunity to pick good to excellent fruit according to varietal and vineyard block combination. Another Octagon Vintage from Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, no Cabernet Sauvignon.

With some of these states, for example Alabama, we are able to ship to an ABC store nearest to you.

It is rare to have a shipment damaged during shipping, however, in the event you do receive a damaged delivery, please let us know. We will need pictures and proof of damage so that we can resolve your claim. Damaged claims will not be accepted without proof. We will replace the wine or issue a credit. The choice is yours!

Deliveries that contain alcohol REQUIRE AN ADULT SIGNATURE. You must be 21 or older to purchase and accept said deliveries.

We cannot ship to PO Boxes, APO/FPO addresses, or internationally.

Shipping fees are not refundable under any circumstances.

There is an additional charge to re-route orders already in transit.

Some items are removed from original packaging, and placed in protective shipping containers to ensure safe delivery.

While most orders are shipped the day they are placed. The demand for limited supplies will occasionally deplete our stock of a paticular product, in this case it will generally take an additional 1 - 2 business days to receive the product and fufill the order.

Although it is rare, if there was a packing error, we would like to resolve it for you! In the event that we shipped an incorrect item, we may ask you to hold on to those items and the exsisting packaging so that we can arrange for a return pick up. If you find that items are missing from your order, we are happy to assist you in reshipping the missing items or processing a credit for the missing item/items. We will provide a return label for incorrect items and credit will be processd upon the return of the item to the warehouse. Reshipment of the correct items will be at no extra charge.

Occasionally a chosen vintage of a wine may sell out or be replaced by a new release after your order is placed. Bottles of wine that are under $20, will not hold up an order and we will simply automatically substitute the wine with the comparable vintage. Please be assured that we will only substitute with a vintage for the same wine. Wine that is valued more than $20 per bottle, we will attempt to contact the customer. After two attempts, the available vintage will be automatically shipped out. (The return policy of $15 return shipping costs, and 15% restocking fee will be enforced.)

Yiannis Wine will not be held liable for damages to orders due to weather conditions during shipping. Potential exposure to extreme heat or cold may damage items during shipping. As we can not be held responsible for products damaged due to weather, we suggest you choose FedEx Express to ship your items and/or add ice packs to your order (during extreme heat) to help prevent damages. We can also place your orders on weather hold until weather conditions improve. Wine is usually fine if it is exposed to some heat (as that is the way wine is made.....Heated so the yeast is activated). If your wine is warm, please place them in a cool, dark room so the wine can "settle."

Most returns will be accepted, but ALL bottles must be returned to get credit. A half bottle or empty bottle of something that did not taste GOOD is fine to return, but the customer will not receive full credit if the bottle is not included.

Sometimes an order is returned to our warehouse after several delivery attempts at the address provided by the customer. We are happy to reship the order however, reshipment fees will apply. Please contact us and we will assist you with the reshipment arrangements.

We are happy to assist with any returns for items purchased that you no longer want or need. Please let us know and we will arrange for the return and issue a credit or refund for your returned items, less the return shipping and handling charges.

We offer some of the most diverse wines in the business, and we are happy to help you choose wines and provide recommendations by our sommeliers if you desire. Everyone has different tastes and Yiannis Wine will not be held responsible for customer choice.
