Château Fonroque - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) 2016 (750ml)
Château Fonroque - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) 2016 (750ml)
Chateau Fonroque is the birthplace of the Moueix family in Saint-Emilion. This property was bought in 1931 by Jean and Adèle, the great grandparents of Alain Moueix, who is now director of this lovely wine estate.
In 2005, as a logical progression of all the procedures undertaken by Alain Moueix and his team, biodynamic methods were implemented for the entire vineyard (started in 2002).
For Alain Moueix, this type of viticulture brings more coherence to his commitment to ecological and high-quality winegrowing. His motivations take into account the environment, the durability of the soils and an aim to bring out the best expression of the terroir as well as the intensity and fine balance of the wines.
Winemaker Notes
The color is dark and intense, promise of a dense wine. The nose is refined, complex and pure with aromas of dark fruit, violet, cinnamon, and other sweet spices. In the mouth, the body is luscious and full. The mineral expression with a saline tendency brings elegance and length. The right measure of acidity produces freshness and tension, on a real density. The fruit is there, rich and ripe. In the final, the wine does not leave you anymore.
Blend: 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
Professional Ratings
95Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 Fonroque has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and opens with black cherries, kirsch, warm blueberries and spice box scents plus hints of tobacco and pencil lead. Medium-bodied, it has a chewy line and plenty of earth-inspired flavors, finishing just a tad grippy.
93Wine Spectator
This has a slightly exotic edge, with warmed fig, crushed plum and steeped raspberry notes, laden with anise, black tea and singed apple wood accents. Though the fruit gushes, this shows focused energy through the finish, with a latent graphite hint. Drink now through 2035.
93Decanter
This was the last vintage with Alain Moueix as the owner - in 2017 he sold the estate to a French insurance company, although he is likely to continue as consultant for the foreseeable future. This has an impressive texture right from the start, with silky black and red fruit that's well knitted together, along with coffee and chocolate. It has clear potential but needs time. 30% new oak. 50hl/ha yield.
92Wine Enthusiast
This wine is superripe and generous in fruit. The contrast is with the dry core of tannins. Juicy blackberry fruits are rich and opulent, cut by acidity and supported by the tannins. Barrel Sample: 90-92.
91Jeb Dunnuck
A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Château Fonroque is a pretty, classy wine that has plenty of tobacco and earthy notes, plenty of darker fruits, medium body, and a supple, lightly textured, balanced style on the palate. It doesn't match the 2015 yet is a beautiful, elegant, nuanced wine to drink over the coming 10-15 years.
90James Suckling
This has a beautifully bright array of red fruit on the nose with a fresh and energetic palate that has plenty of fresh acidity and a fresh, sheet-like kick of tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes. Biodyvin certified. Try from 2021.

There is an additional charge to re-route orders already in transit.
Some items are removed from original packaging, and placed in protective shipping containers to ensure safe delivery.
While most orders are shipped the day they are placed. The demand for limited supplies will occasionally deplete our stock of a paticular product, in this case it will generally take an additional 1 - 2 business days to receive the product and fufill the order.
Although it is rare, if there was a packing error, we would like to resolve it for you! In the event that we shipped an incorrect item, we may ask you to hold on to those items and the exsisting packaging so that we can arrange for a return pick up. Occasionally a chosen vintage of a wine may sell out or be replaced by a new release after your order is placed. Bottles of wine that are under $20, will not hold up an order and we will simply automatically substitute the wine with the comparable vintage. Please be assured that we will only substitute with a vintage for the same wine. Wine that is valued more than $20 per bottle, we will attempt to contact the customer. After two attempts, the available vintage will be automatically shipped out. (The return policy of $15 return shipping costs, and 15% restocking fee will be enforced.)
Yiannis Wine will not be held liable for damages to orders due to weather conditions during shipping. Potential exposure to extreme heat or cold may damage items during shipping. As we can not be held responsible for products damaged due to weather, we suggest you choose FedEx Express to ship your items and/or add ice packs to your order (during extreme heat) to help prevent damages. We can also place your orders on weather hold until weather conditions improve. Wine is usually fine if it is exposed to some heat (as that is the way wine is made.....Heated so the yeast is activated). If your wine is warm, please place them in a cool, dark room so the wine can "settle."
Most returns will be accepted, but ALL bottles must be returned to get credit. A half bottle or empty bottle of something that did not taste GOOD is fine to return, but the customer will not receive full credit if the bottle is not included.
Sometimes an order is returned to our warehouse after several delivery attempts at the address provided by the customer. We are happy to reship the order however, reshipment fees will apply. Please contact us and we will assist you with the reshipment arrangements.
We are happy to assist with any returns for items purchased that you no longer want or need. Please let us know and we will arrange for the return and issue a credit or refund for your returned items, less the return shipping and handling charges.
